“The SMA is growing and changing. It is developing into a part of a student’s home campus where they can set a pace for taking courses which would allow them to earn as many as 60 college hours by the time they complete their senior year in high school. It is an exciting time to be a student in St. James Parish,” Director Pamela Bourgeois said.

The focus of the Science and Math Academy is evolving into one of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). It is a satellite center for Lutcher High and St. James High students to gather to take courses which advance them through their studies at a faster pace than customary.

While there is a STEM focus, 10th-12th grade students have the opportunity to register for a variety of dual enrollment courses to earn college credit while still attending high school. The journey begins, however, with middle school students taking Carnegie (high school) credit courses such as Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, Pre-Engineering, Keyboarding and Education for Careers.
